Through the Darkness (or Those Who Read Hearts of Evil) is a South Korean crime thriller series that was released in 2022 and was inspired by the non-fiction book written by Korea's first criminal profiler, Kwon Il-yong. The series stars Kim Nam-gil as Song Ha-young, an empathetic and contemplative detective who often practices an ambiguous form of thinking which lies in between intuitive and analytical, and who is regarded as one of the first true pioneers of criminal behavior analysis. While Song Ha-young brings an innovative form of thinking to the process of investigating the heinous dispositions of criminals, his mentor, Gook Young-soo (and played by Jin Seon-kyu), travels with him to begin South Korea's first criminal profiling team at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

The series takes place in the late 1990s and early 2000s as they navigate their attempts to move the new focus of criminal investigation forward within the traditional practices of a police force filled with defensive skepticism and resistant to change. As a unique investigator with the ability to empathize with the plight of victims and the perpetrators of crime, Song Ha-young embodies a respectful instinctual insight towards understanding serial killers, yet alongside this unique gift is an emotional price tag. What is particularly interesting and remarkable about Through the Darkness, is the thematic representation of the psychological burden in recognizing, confronting, and having to account for pure evil in his quest to understand individuals with degrading dispositions, as well as the notion of "making a case" for all of the forgotten anguish that was imposed upon victims in the face of glorifying a perpetrator.
