Aema
๐ Synopsis Open
Set in 1980s South Korea, during the Chun Doo-hwan military dictatorship, Aema tells the fictional story surrounding South Korea's first erotic film, Madame Aema. It follows leading actress Jeong Hee-ran (Lee Ha-nee), who is tired of being typecast on screen with roles that openly sexualize her, and takes a bold stand by publicly stating she will not do nudity anymore. Hee-ran's public announcement grabs the attention of the studio's misogynistic head Ku Jung-ho (Jin Sun-kyu), who see's his tarnished reputation as a threat and makes moves to replace Hee-ran with Shin Ju-ae (Bang Hyo-rin), an ambitious nightclub dancer who is bothered by the notion of being rejected for the role, and decides to turn her frustration into action. Hee-ran and Ju-ae's relationship begins as a rivalry then grows into a collective resistance against the exploitative film industry and repressive society that they contend with via censorship, government interference, and ultimately personal sacrifice in the process. The series uses comedy and drama to share the lived experiences of women living in the stark realities of the time, while also encouraging celebrations of female resistance.
